Canon EOS Utility 3 – Still Working in Mac OS Sequoia?

***UPDATE*** – January 6, 2026

Canon has not budged on updating EOS Utility 3. Here is a direct quote from their Canadian website: “Environment:  To use this software, your computer has to meet the following system requirements.

1. Supported OSes
macOS 13, macOS 12, macOS 11.4, macOS 10.15.3 or later
*Important*
The camera cannot be recognized when connected via USB to macOS 13 Mac computers that use Apple Silicon.”

Re: Canon Digital Photo Professional

I tried to download the latest version today (DPP 4.20.30.0) but the server refused to do it! Following message received –

Error 403–Forbidden
From RFC 2068 Hypertext Transfer Protocol — HTTP/1.1:10.4.4 403 ForbiddenThe server understood the request, but is refusing to fulfill it. Authorization will not help and the request SHOULD NOT be repeated. ***UPDATE*** – April 7, 2025

Have now updated Sequoia to v15.4 – my Canon DPP v4 still working. DPP 4 now available to download at Canon’s Canadian and American sites (ver. 4.17.30). Download that and  upgrade to 4.19.31.0 from Canon once it’s installed.

***UPDATE*** – March 8, 2025

Looks like Canon is really slipping when it comes to updating their software. Now there is no Digital Photo Professional v4 app available for Mac OS Sequoia. The last download available for it is in Sonoma. However, my copy of Digital Photo Professional 4 is still working in my version of Sequoia (15.3.1). Also, there is no Canon Utility 3, it has been removed as well. At this point, I have disabled further automatic software updates of Sequoia to preserve what Canon functionality I have. I use Canon’s Digital Photo Professional v4 app to preserve my canon raw file colour before proceeding to Adobe Camera Raw (ACR). This is because Canon’s colour science is a closely guarded secret, so Adobe’s ACR is only guessing when it comes to approximating Canon’s camera display profiles. I should say though, they are very good guesses – but they remain guesses.

*** UDATE – February 16, 2025 ***

I FORGOT TO MENTION THAT IF YOU JUST NEED TO DOWNLOAD IMAGES FROM YOUR CAMERA, APPLE’S IMAGE CAPTURE APP (FOUND IN LAUNCHPAD IN “OTHER”) IS FASTER THAN CANON UTILITY 3. IT ALSO WORKS WITH DPP 4, ALLOWING YOU TO CAPTURE CANON COLOUR AND THEN “CONVERT AND SAVE” TO A 16 BIT TIFF FOR FURTHER WORK IN PHOTSHOP CAMERA RAW OR THE MAIN PROGRAM. CLICK ON THE NAME OF YOUR CAMERA TO GET STARTED, WITH ALL THE USUAL FUNCTIONALITY. HAVING YOUR CAMERA RUNNING (CONNECTED AND ON) BEFORE YOU OPEN THE APP SEEMS TO WORK BEST.

***UPDATE – February 6, 2025***

I CAN CONFIRM THAT MAC OS SEQUOIA 15.0.3 DOESN’T RUN CANON UTILITY 3 EVEN WITH THE REMEDIES OUTLINED BELOW. IT JUST QUITS WITHIN A MINUTE OR SO. THIS SEEMS TO BE BECAUSE IT IS A SYSTEM EXTENSION WHICH IS NOT UP TO DATE WITH APPLE’S OS. WILL POST AN UPDATE IF I FIND A SOLUTION, THERE MAY BE A WAY BY DOWNGRADING YOUR COMPUTER’S SECURITY SETTINGS, BUT I HAVEN’T TRIED THIS YET, AND I MAY NOT. ALSO, I COULD NOT OUTPUT A 16 BIT TIFF FROM  CANON’S DIGITAL PHOTO PROFESSIONAL WITH THIS NEW UPDATE OF SEQUOIA. FORTUNATELY I HAVE AN OLDER MAC WHICH STILL RUNS MY USUAL WORKFLOW.

When I updated to Mac OS Sequoia (15.0.1) recently I had trouble with Canon Utility 3 which would not launch. However I did a couple of things:

  1. Updated my Canon camera firmware to 1.4 from 1.3 (your camera firmware may have different numbers – get the latest).
  2. Went to the Canon Europe site to download version 3.18.41.0 of Canon Utility 3. This version is currently not available on the U.S. or Canadian Canon sites as of this writing (November 11, 2024).

Unfortunately Apple moves quickly to newer Mac OS software versions and even discontinues THEIR OWN support for their previous OS versions within a few new iterations. Canon has fallen behind with the Mac versions of their software. Here’s hoping they will step up and improve. Too many photographers are being let down by the current Canon lag behind Apple’s frequent OS updates.

Hope this info helps, my Utility 3 software is now working in Sequoia.
